Message from the President
I want to talk about our treasured Japanese Garden where we can find, after some meandering, the Poet’s Stone. Many visitors to the Garden don’t know the history, many of you do, but I wish to bring this wonderful gift into your universe. Mizuhara Shuoshi’s poetry is especially known for his subtle emotional expression. He is regarded as one of the great haiku poet laureates of Japan.
Mizuhara Shuoshi offered, during a chance meeting with Professor Tono, the designer of the Japanese Garden, a trio of poems he had written that afternoon while visiting the garden. After careful consideration Professor Tono chose one.
Here, miles from Japan
Here, miles from Japan
I stand as if warmed by the
spring sunshine of home.
Months later, the Garden received a crated stone inscribed with Mizuhara Shuoshi’s poem.
