The Portland, Oregon Chapter #47 is an affiliate of the international organization. Its headquarters is in Tokyo, Japan. This chapter was founded in 1961 by Mrs. Morris Schnitzer.
Eligibility for membership: Those who are active in any of the various Japanese Schools of Ikebana and those who are interested in the cultural and artistic aspects of Japan are eligible for membership.
Dues: $65.00 a year (1 June to 31 May). From these dues, $60.00 is sent to the Headquarters in Tokyo, Japan. In return, members receive the Sakura newsletters and 3 issues of the Ikebana magazine.
Handbooks: Membership roster, by-laws and other information are given to each member.
Communication: Newsletters are monthly written monthly by the President to inform members of meeting dates, current events and related information.
Programs: Each year, monthly general meetings are planned from September through May to bring fresh outlooks and insights to our studies. They are usually held on the last Monday of each month. Additionally, an annual Holiday Tea is held in December and the installation of new officers takes place during the May meeting. On special occasions, visits by Ikebana Masters bring fresh outlooks to our studies.
Flower Exhibitions: Special exhibits are held in the spring and autumn. In addition, each school sponsors its own exhibitions for the public to enjoy and to learn about the art of lower arranging.
Committees: Members are encouraged to participate in committees where they can become better acquainted with others and the chapter as an organization.
Community Out-reach Activities: Members conduct wide varieties of activities for schools and community groups. These include arranging flowers in the Tokonoma in the Japan Gallery at the Portland Art Museum, demonstrating and teaching flower arrangements, origami folding, story telling, history lessons and similar activities.
